Some of what we love is the snow, lots of it, and the activities that goes with it— sledding, snowboarding, skiing, riding behind the snowmobile, etc.. There is also a gym where we play basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, group games, and are able to do some rock climbing. Saturday Night is the “Wild and Wacky Entertainment” where you never know what you’ll see; there’s just hanging out in the game room or playing cards with a group of friends. Oh, and don’t’ forget a few “friendly” pranks and staying up late talking. Throw in a 2 ½ hour bus ride and the experience is complete! Well, almost…the idea behind a retreat is to take a few days away from the normal nature of life to have some fun AND think about life and be encouraged in your walk with the Lord.
I believe our times of worship and teaching from God’s Word are the real driving force behind the popularity of our retreats. Students are hungry for solid instruction about God’s ways and how to live everyday life. They meet God there in a special and unique way.
A yearly retreat is a good idea, but all of us need regular retreats to be refreshed and meet with God. It should start with a daily retreat—a few minutes alone with God to read the Bible and spend some time in prayer. Don’t overlook the importance of meeting with God personally each day to express devotion and get direction. God has given us a weekly retreat as well—the Lord’s Day. Each Sunday we have an opportunity to gather with other Christians for worship and natural growth.
So, we have already begun to anticipate next year’s winter retreats but I want to encourage all of us not to overlook the daily and weekly opportunities for “retreat.” Nothing will change our lives more than investing in a growing relationship with God…RETREAT!
